Google reviews: how to ask and how to reply

A tactful way to ask for a review, and example replies, including to a negative one.

Google reviews affect both trust and whether you appear on the map. In the funeral sector, though, asking for a review takes particular tact.

When and how to ask

  • Not on the day of the funeral. A week or two later is more appropriate.
  • In a short thank-you message, with a direct link to the review form
  • Only once and without pressure
  • Never in exchange for a discount or a gift

An example message

“Thank you for trusting us at such a difficult time. If you wish, we would be grateful if you shared your experience on Google. It helps other families looking for support.”

How to reply

Reply to every review, briefly and personally. Thank the person by name if they gave it, and avoid template phrases.

A negative review

  • Don’t reply straight away and don’t argue in public
  • Acknowledge the experience without revealing details of the service
  • Offer a conversation by phone or email
  • If the review breaks Google’s rules, report it

Never buy or write reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and undermines trust. Read more about your profile in our article on Google Maps.
