It is with sadness that we share the death of

Arthur James Whitfield

12 March 1941 – 18 October 2026

Funeral notice

Arthur taught maths at Brackenford High School for 38 years, and half the town still remembers him with chalk in hand, patiently explaining the same problem for the fifth time. Saturday mornings meant the market, Sundays meant the allotment, and summer evenings meant a game of chess on the bench outside the library.

He loved a long walk on the fells, the apples from his own tree and his grandchildren, who heard more about the Lake District than any guidebook could tell them.

Much loved husband of Margaret, dad to Peter and Nick, and grandad to four.
